IEEE 802.16 Wireless Mesh Networks Capacity Assessment Using Collision Domains
نویسنده
چکیده
Wireless Mesh Networks (WMN) are considered an attractive alternative to the traditional wired backbone networks for broadband Internet access. However, their capacity is limited due to the nature of the radio channel, which must be shared by the nodes forwarding the traffic from and to the gateway. Therefore, estimating the capacity of WMNs is an important question. The capacity analysis proposed for ad hoc networks can not be directly applied to WMN due to some fundamental differences, e.g. a different traffic pattern and node density. The main contribution of this work is the application of collision domains concept to the IEEE 802.16 based WMNs. We consider a simple chain topology but the method can be extended to any arbitrary topology and the real world impairments (interference, fading, etc.) can be easily incorporated in the analysis. The presented results may have important implications for 802.16 mesh networks planning. Keywordscapacity analysis; collision domains; IEEE 802.16; mesh network

Wireless mesh networks (WMNs) are one of the emerging technologies. Their capability for selforganization significantly reduces the complexity of network deployment and maintenance, and thus, requires minimal upfront investment. These networks consist of simple mesh routers and mesh clients, where mesh routers have minimal mobility and form the backbone of WMNs. They provide network access for ...

The IEEE 802.16(d) mesh coordinated distributed scheduling (CDS) mode is a novel technology for future fixed wireless backbone networks and designed for the use of omnidirectional antennas. The use of Single-Switched-Beam Antennas (SSBAs) may have great potential to increase network capacity due to the antenna directivity. However, a network designed for omnidirectional antennas usually cannot ...

Multi-hop wireless mesh networks (M-WMNs) [Akyildiz, I. F., 2005] are one of the key features of beyond 3G systems because of their flexibility and low-cost deployment. So far, most of existing studies on multi-hop wireless mesh networks have been accomplished based on the IEEE 802.11 ad hoc mode. The IEEE 802.16 working group (WG) specified the IEEE 802.16-2004 standard [IEEE Std. 802.16-2004,...
